There is no doubt that home schooling in California is one of the hardest states to do it in. This is because the requirements are pretty strict. This has led to some rumors going round that home schooling in California is illegal, but that is definitely not true.
In California, just like any other state in the United States of America, when homeschooling you are required to follow an accredited and recognized curriculum which can come from a public school, private school, or other accredited source.
Capability to Teach
There have also been some rumors about the fact that California home scholars should have a California teaching license in order to be considered a qualified teacher for the students that they are teaching.
This rumor is also not true, since the Californian law very simply states that any teacher participating in homeschooling must be capable of teaching. Of course it's certainly can't do any harm to get a certified Californian teaching license, but it is not legally required.
Evidently, this statement can be interpreted in a very vague sense. In this way, home schooling has a sort of vague quality in California.
In a privately run or a publicly run school it will be the people in charge of running the school who decide whether or not there teachers are capable of teaching, plus of course their initial certifications the teachers have already obtained to get their teaching job.
But the process for home schooling in California is different, since the parent and the teacher are very often one and the same.
Setting up a home school in California
A good thing to do right away is to officially declare yourself a private school. Doing so will sort out a lot of questions early on, even if you only have one child to homeschool this is recommended.
There is another option you can implement and this is to sign your child up at your local school and then register for an independent study program that you can use to tutor your child from home.
In either of these two paths, you should be able to open up your own home school in California without too much red tape.
A Tutor
Obviously a tutor will be necessary in a homeschool. In most homeschools It is one of the parents who takes it on their selves to fill this role, but it doesn't have to be that way if you don't want it to be. You can pay a tutor to come to your home and tutor your children.
As we've already covered a homeschool teacher does not have to be legally certified, but clearly has to be above capable of teaching.
If the tutor is an adult hired by the parents to be the primary teacher, most parents opening home schools in California understandably demand that the tutor have a proper teaching certification.
Setting up your homeschool in California is going to take a little work and implementing it, especially if you are the tutor, will definitely required dedication and planning, but the benefits it can bring to your child should make it all worthwhile.
