Have you entertained thoughts of going back to school to get a degree or to complete a degree program you started previously, but dismissed the idea because you thought you were too old to go back to school?

When most people think of school, young 18 to 20 year olds come to mind. The reality is that higher learning is not limited to a certain age group. Any person desiring to better themselves by going back to school is entitled and even encouraged to do so, regardless of age.

No person is ever too old to return to school. Going back to school may require a few sacrifices that may push you outside your comfort zone, however, doing so could turn out to be the most beneficial decisions you have ever made.

In 2007, a 95 year old woman by the name of Nola Ochs, became the world's oldest college graduate. She earned a degree in General Studies from Fort Hays State University.

Mozelle Richardson got a degree in journalism from the University of Oklahoma in 2004. She was 90 years old when graduated, making her the second oldest college graduate in the world.

If these women mustered the gumption to go back to school, so can you. Don't be discouraged. Be inspired. Think of all of the possibilities. Weigh the pros and cons.

Going back to school is an opportunity to:

1. Grow professionally.

2. Earn more money.

3. Avoid being passed up for promotions.

4. Acquire new skills.

5. Change Careers.

6. Discover new career opportunities.

7. Expand your personal and professional network.

8. Achieve educational goals.

9. Personal fulfillment.

10. Demonstrate the importance of education to your children/grandchildren.

Living life abundantly means committing to life long learning; with knowledge comes growth.

There are a lot of programs and scholarships for non traditional students. E.g., mature women 40 and over, may apply for the AARP Foundation Women's Scholarship Program. For more information visit www.aarpfoundationwlc.org
