Have A Musical Night In For Under £10

Even with great value London theatre breaks available from companies like Show and Stay, a trip to the West End is sometimes impossible. When you can't get a sitter for the kids, money's a bit tight, or you just don't really feel like visiting London's Theatreland, enjoy the next best thing on your own sofa for under £10.

All you'll need is a bottle of affordable (cheap) wine from your local supermarket, and one of the DVDs from the list below. All of the musicals in our list are available online for less than a tenner.

Mamma Mia!
It's not often that you get to hear Pierce Brosnan sing and although the film adaptation of this hit stage musical isn't quite as good as the West End version, it's still a lot of fun. Sing along to all the Abba classics alone in your dressing gown, or get the girls round for a night of Dancing Queen and fizzy wine. No matter who you choose to spend your musical evening with, you can be sure that you'll have a lot of fun.

Little Voice
Perhaps Jane Horrocks' best performance, Little Voice recently came to the West End with X Factor runner-up Diana Vickers in the lead role. Though Vickers' performance was passable, it wasn't a patch on Horrocks'. To get the true Little Voice experience all you really need is a DVD that costs less than a hamburger. Settle in for an evening of gritty comedy and incredible vocals with Little Voice, and you'll be smiling all night long.

Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit
Without question the best film about nuns ever made, Sister Act 2 has all you need for an uplifting night in. With the inimitable Whoopi Goldberg and the utterly gifted Lauryn Hill starring in a film that features a hip-hop gospel choir, you know you're onto a winner. Sure, it's a little corny and the West End adaptation of the original Sister Act is a little better, but Sister Act 2 is a great way to get your musical fix without visiting London.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter in gothic Victorian costume with Tim Burton pulling the strings is already a recipe for success, throw in Sondheim and you've got a jaw-dropping combo. You'll find no other musical as dark, as bloody, or as infectious as Sweeney Todd. Burton's familiar gloomy cinematography fits Sondheim's score wonderfully and, surprisingly, Bonham-Carter and Depp provide the sort of vocals that you'd expect of 'proper' West End performers. Keep in mind, this isn't one to watch with the kids; that's what Sister Act 2 is for.

Bugsy Malone
The perfect choice for a family musical night, Bugsy Malone will please everyone from toddlers to great-aunt Bessie. Gangsters, molls, sing-along songs aplenty and splurge guns combine to make the sort of musical that should have come to the West End years ago. Listen out for So You Wanna Be A Boxer? and see if you can spot a VERY young Jodie Foster.
