Pregnancy After Tubal Reversal - How to Be Sure

Once you have had your reversal surgery, what do you do for pregnancy after tubal reversal? There are a few steps you should take and these are covered below.

Let's start with learning if you really are pregnant. Since you are showing signs of being pregnant, you will want to test and see if you really are. There are two ways you can do so. One requires a visit to the doctor's office. That is where your blood will be drawn and tested. The other is by buying a home pregnancy test which uses your urine to test for a positive. As the later are usually accurate to 97%, you should pick one up at your local supermarket and test.

While home pregnancy tests are very accurate, you could still get a negative indication on one. However, if you still show signs of being pregnant, try taking it again in a few days. Otherwise, you might want to get a blood test done at the doctor's office.

Finding out you are definitely pregnant is where the real testing begins. Every two or three days you should have your human chorionic gonadotropin, or HCG as we will call it from here on out, levels checked. This is the protocol established by Dr. Gary Berger, the top tubal reversal doctor.

The important point for HCG is when it reaches 1500. That is when you will need to have an ultrasound performed. Whoever does the ultrasound should be looking for the gestational sac in the uterine cavity.

If a gestational sac is seen, you're good to go. However, if not, you will need to do the HCG test and ultrasound again in two days. Although that may not be comfortable, there's a chance your doctor will not see the sac until HCG reaches 2500.

When you do get a positive on the gestational sac, you will need yet one more ultrasound in about a week to look for the yolk sac. The reason you are bothering with all this is to be sure you do indeed have a uterine pregnancy.

The reason for all the testing and ultrasounds is really quite simple. After a tubal reversal, there is an increased chance of an ectopic pregnancy by 10-15%. You are testing to be sure you are really pregnant and that the egg has implanted in the uterus. You don't want it to be developing in your tube. You especially don't want that after having gone through the surgery to reconnect your tubes. They hold the promise of your future children. If it turns out to be an ectopic pregnancy, you want to know right away so steps can be taken to make it all safer for you and your tube.

Beyond all of the above, if you were lucky enough to have Dr. Gary Berger of Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center as your tubal reversal doctor, he will want to know right away that you are pregnant. Please be sure to submit the Pregnancy Report as soon as you test positive for being pregnant. He wants to be kept up to date and is available for any questions or concerns from his patients. The Chapel Hill staff is even available seven days a week to answer your questions.
