Discover the Health Secret of a Sports Champion, a Humble Berry

Layne Beachley, as many readers may already know, is a woman from the Manly suburb of Sydney, Australia who is regarded by most as the greatest female surfer of all time. She has won the Association of Surfing Professionals' World Surfing Championship seven times.

As with other champion athletes, she has secrets to her success, but one of them is her diet. One component of that champion-making diet is the Acai fruit.

Acai berries have recently become a hot topic in the news and are quickly gaining notoriety as one of the most nutritious fruits available. They're found in the Amazon rain forest and contain the highest oxygen radical absorbance capacity, also known as ORAC, of any berry in the world considered edible. The ORAC rating compares the level of antioxidants present in foods.

Antioxidants are important, of course, and most of us have heard of them. These include vitamins such as beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, and the substances found in green tea, among many others. These substances protect our bodies from the "rusting" of tissues and arteries that occur because of this oxidation. Oxidation occurs naturally with food digestion, but if left by itself and without the intervention of antioxidants, it can cause much damage and lead to disease, premature aging, and even premature death.

The Acai berry also contains an abundance of Oleic (omega 9) monounsaturated essential fatty acid, which helps in lowering the "bad cholesterol" LDL and with maintaining the "good cholesterol" or HDL, and Linoleic (omega 6) polyunsaturated essential fatty acid which does the same thing. Thus the fruit provides very healthy fats, essential for strengthening the heart, which lives on fat, something which, of course, all great athletes need.

In addition, the acai berry contains phytosterols, which are sterols that come from plants. These compounds of plant cell membranes assist our bodies in many ways, but one of their major benefits is that they reduce blood plasma cholesterol and provide a source of dietary fiber.

Further, the acai berry is also abundant in a particular class of flavonoids called anthocyanins. These substances colour plants in the familiar blue, purple and red hues found in many flowers, cereal grains, vegetables and fruits.

The acai berry is represented by over 600 molecular structures, and research has found that the properties of this modest berry provide benefits including suppression of human cancer cell growth, inhibiting mutations caused by mutagens in cooked food, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities that are very powerful, improvement of eyesight, blood pressure reduction, and protection from liver damage.

Clearly, the Acai berry and its fresh, all natural juice should be considered a "superfood" and "superdrink". Health conscious Aussies as well as those who may want to follow in Layne Beachley's bare footsteps and become champion athletes should incorporate Acai berries and products into their diets.
