Other behavioral patterns usually try to mask indicators of over reliance on illicit drugs. Addiction to illicit substances commences when the person can't help wanting to use the drug without considering the physical or emotional consequences. There are nonetheless some obvious indicators to look for if you want to find out if you or some one you love has an dependence problem.

The sign on top of the list will be the inability to say no to the drug. Those dependent on drugs cannot envision a life without the drug of their choice. They would go to any lengths to get supplies of illicit drugs for regular use and will often over use too.

The only thing that matters to addicts is the next 'fix'. All earlier pastimes such as hobbies, families, work and college become unimportant. Nothing else matters except the use of the drug of choice.

Another good sign of drug habit is wild variations in moods. They are either 'up' or 'down' and not ever what could be called 'regular'. Angry outbursts and irrational behavior also become regular. Addicts will begin doing things that they normally would not do, if they cannot get their fix when the urge takes over.

Changes in the physical shape commence manifesting when the addiction has set in. They are likely to lose weight rapidly and become skinny and ashen in manifestation. Personal hygiene takes a back seat and they start looking unkempt and seedy. Eyes become dull and limp and they often foster sores on their bodies. They develop a indifferent look about them.

Since regular consumption of drugs builds up imperviousness in the system, the user starts craving more and more dosage to attain the same old high.

Addicts start behaving weirdly now and then bordering on wariness. They will withdraw from gatherings, absent themselves for no plain grounds. They may emotionally detach themselves from those that they were formerly attached to. With such alienation, it becomes easier for them to use illicit drugs without fear of disapproval and disdain from those close to them.

Drug dependence often leads to severe depression. Signs of desperateness, negativism, removal from company are all indicators of such depression. Performance indicators at work and school can take a turn for the worse for no evident grounds. They may not want to get out of bed for long periods of time and show obvious indicators of constant exhaustion.

Drug habit is a disorder, a serious one. No sooner than it is seen for what it is, help must be sought. It is never too late be it for yourself or some one you care for.
