Training Your Mind to Increase Mental Power

When you talk about how to increase mental power, you can get a vision of your mind, working fast and furious at warp speed- solving issues and problems left and right.

This seems to make sense, right?

Except that as we enter this new age of enlightenment we begin to see that the mind has a 'mind of its own.' And getting caught up in the obsessive swirl of the mind following its agenda has become what Ekhart Tolle calls society's 'disease' of compulsive thinking. And in actuality what we need to do is quiet the mind, and slow it down so that it can perform its duties when necessary with more power.

Many people in this day and age can truly understand Mr. Tolle's words. Most of us have had the experience of this compulsive mind disease. Perhaps we are out of a job, or facing some illness, or a loved one is. Perhaps it is financial distress or marital. We try to think of something else, but instead our mind churns away at the problem. We try jogging, hot baths, movies, TV, books, and perhaps in desperation a sleeping pill. Still we are haunted by our own thoughts that seem- like some demented computer- to have no off button, and to follow their own course instead of ours. And so it might be said that the mind has a 'mind of its own.'

It is at times like this that we can feel that we have an enemy in our camp, and it is our very own brain. This is especially true since the mind loves to tell us disparaging and discouraging things about ourselves- thinking, I suppose, that this will help to solve the problem.

So the task when you increase mental power becomes one of literally training the mind. We need to train the mind about when to turn on and when to turn off. And we need to train the mind to focus on our subject, not its own.

But I want to tell you it can be done. And I am the living proof. For instance, in my life right now circumstances are not very stable. I am starting a business, finding a job, facing a back injury, and losing my father- whom I love dearly. A lot of people would become paralyzed at this point by the obsessive thoughts on how to fix or overcome it all. I, however, live a relatively peaceful, happy life because I have trained my mind to follow my lead, and think about my agenda. When I have thoughts or feelings, I know how to allow them to pass through me, and I move on.

There are many methods I have used to train my mind. Today for instance I focused on what could be done while lying down. This included a brain entrainment CD, a hypnosis CD, and a meditation CD, as well as some soft music. Later I took a walk in nature and kept calling myself to be present to the quiet. And when my mind jumped in with my cares and woes, I thanked it for sharing, and politely declined to continue the thoughts. In general, I try to be gentle with my mind. I know that my mind really believes, in some odd way, that it is helping me.
