Creatively Speaking

Recently a friend was talking to me about her first experience in a store where you can paint your own pottery. She was excited and animated while talking about this experience, and explained how she wanted to be there everyday during lunch to paint. That she could just live in that store and paint all day. I understand that passion and loved seeing it in her.

Then she said a statement in the conversation that completely took me aback, "I've never done anything like this before in my life, I'm one of those people who have no talent, or an artistic bone in my body." I asked her if she really truly thought that about herself, and she said that she did feel that way.

I do not believe that about any person. I think people just haven't found their "niche" yet, that there undiscovered talent and skills, which hasn't been found yet. It's actually an exciting prospect to help someone discover talents perhaps they had never perhaps had opportunity to explore before.

I've found in my own life in seasons where I was not creating in some form, that I just felt slightly "off". Something was missing. I think we as a people are born with a need to express creativity. Sometimes it requires a process to discover what the blockages to that process may be in a person.

Enlarge your idea and definition of what creativity is. It isn't limited to a person who can draw or paint or write. Most didn't just take it up and were good at it at their first attempt. It was a natural talent, but it needed to be developed. They learned and practiced to become good at what they do. Almost anything and any medium can be an art form. Gardening can be for instance. I've seen some gardens that truly were a work of art and were breath taking to see. I've seen junk turned into art of various kinds, there's jewelry making, basket weaving, knitting, spinning your own yarn, photography, too much to list. Try making a list or doing some research into kinds you've not considered before. Visit some art shows for ideas.

Take some time discovering some areas of interest for yourself. What are you drawn to? Where are you curious about how it was created and the process to make it? What are some things you love to do? Those are good areas to begin researching. Consider taking some lessons to see if the interest increases or decreases once you dabble in it.

Put action to a commitment to learn to do something new. Stop the excuses and fear and do expect perfectionism. Allow yourself plenty of room to learn. Every person who has mastered a skill went through much to get that mastery. If after a truly fair shot at something, it just doesn't do it for you, give yourself permission to try something else, until you do find that fit.

Creativity isn't just about what we're doing. It's also about who we are as people. When we begin to move in our creativity, it will affect others around us as well. Its so amazing when you see that spark of creativity begin to spark creativity in those around us as well.
