Hair extensions are a great way to get your hair longer, thicker, and fuller than you could simply by using styling products! Extensions have come a long way since they were first introduced. Now, people looking for a change have more options then they could have ever dreamed of. Today you'll find new tools and chemicals, different methods for attaching the hair, and more style possibilities then ever before.
There are numerous ways to attach extensions, but they break down into three major categories: clip-in extensions, bonded/sewn weft extensions, and strand-by-strand extensions. Clip-in extensions are the easiest of the three systems, because the extensions are sewn onto a clip that the client can put in and take out as she pleases. These extensions will last much longer than traditional extensions, since their quality is not dependent on the growth of the hair.
The second type of extension is called a ''weft extension''. The term weft refers to a form of the extension hair which is attached at one end and free-flowing at the other, resulting in a curtain-like look. These extensions are applied either by gluing or sewing, one weft at a time.
The last and most time-consuming method for doing extensions is called ''strand-by-strand''. This name comes from the fact that the hair is applied in small sections consisting of fifty to several hundred individual strands. These small sections are attached using glues or polymers, clamping devices, or heat fusing methods. Even though they take longer to complete, strand-by-strand extensions are often less noticeable than other methods.
When it comes to strand-by-strand extensions, they can be added with an adhesive substance or with the aid of a clamping device, such as a micro link. Both of these methods should be taken into consideration. While using an adhesive substance can make the extensions appear more natural, the clamping devices are obviously much healthier for your hair.
If you're considering hair extensions, keep this in mind:
* There are close to 100 different names for extensions. They may refer to the type of hair used, the process used to attach the extensions, or the materials used during the process. If you're not sure which type of extensions is right for you, just ask your salon professional.
* If you have extensions, it's important to remember that they require extra care and maintenance. Be sure to check with your stylist on the appropriate care and maintenance guidelines for the extensions method you choose.
* Human hair extensions work best if you're going for a natural look, since they most closely match the texture and color of your existing hair. If you want extensions that make a statement, like those that are vibrant red, blue, green or orange, you're better off with synthetic hair. That's because synthetic hair offers many more color options to choose from.
* Extensions can be much heavier than your natural hair. If this idea bothers you, make sure to talk to your stylist about possibly adding fewer extensions.
* Some glues or adhesives used to attach extensions can cause allergic reactions, so make sure to let your stylist know about any allergies you have.
