By charging these initial fees, the company guarantees that it will not lose money on sales associates who sign up, receive their materials and training, and then just walk away. Unfortunately, some companies charge very high fees, making it difficult for the new recruit to earn it all back, let alone make a reasonable profit off the arrangement.
Even less desirable is the business which encourages sales associates to make most, if not all, their money off of recruiting new people. These are called cash gifting businesses, and are rarely worth getting into. New recruits are charged very high fees, and are then expected to get their money back from cuts of the fees that their recruits pay.
A good example of a business with this type of structure is a cash gifting operation. However, it is best to be wary of this type of operation, as this business model is unsustainable for obvious reasons.

In addition, one must examine, and get straight answers about, how quickly they can earn back these fees and make the desired profit level. As far as taking these types of businesses apart that we've discussed here today, the core difference is in their fees. A good business has reasonable and low fees. A bad business has unreasonable, high fees that will be hard to recoup.
Network marketing and MLM are sound ways for organizing a business that uses associates to bring in income. It is nonetheless important to beware of poorly organized companies, such as those where starting fees are very high and most of your income would come from recruiting new members.
