The history of the electric guitar goes back to the 1930s and has ever since changed the way music is played and sounds.

The first electric guitar was made in the 1930s. At first, it was criticized. But it was before its time and the sound was too unique. As people began to realize that the electric guitar was more versatile and had a unique personality, it began to rise in popularity.

The electric guitar's importance became known at the time when jazz orchestras multiplied in number. The electric guitar was originally designed by a collection of guitar manufacturers, electronics aficionados, and instrument producers.

The first electric guitar was designed by Les Paul, who experimented with microphones attached to guitars. The very first time that such a guitar was played in public was in Wichita, Kansas by Gage Brewer.

George Beauchamp from Los Angeles gave two of the electric guitars to Brewer. Brewer further advertised the instruments in an article in Wichita Beacon, 1932 and at a Halloween performance in October. But it would take a few more years yet to have the electric guitar recorded.

The first electric guitar recording was, contrary to popular belief not by Eddie Durham but it was in Chicago in 1938, by a jazz artist known as George Barnes. He recorded two songs, Sweetheart Land and It's a Low-Down Dirty Shame.

George Beauchamp, Paul Barth and Adolph Rickenbacker created a company called Electro String Instrument Corporation which began to produce the first electric guitars to the general public in 1931.

The company's produced guitars nicknamed "Frying Pans" due to there look and shape. They were constructed from cast aluminum and were played while they rested on a persons lap with a steel slide. According to people who have played antiques of the Frying Pans they actually sounded very modern.

The first commercially successfully guitar was made by a radio repairman named Leo Fender. As a solid-bodied guitar it was different from the hollow Jazz-style guitars that had been made previously. Called the "Esquire" it quickly became a favorite of Californian country and western guitarists.
