At times, teachers may feel inundated with theories, methodologies, teaching strategies, etc.etc.etc.

Please remember that since these are your students and this is your classroom, you are in control of the rules.

One bit of information that I always pass on to my student teachers and teachers with little experience, is that it's important to learn from more experienced teachers by watching them teach and reading as much as they can about any teaching strategies they have written. After that they will be in a much better position to pick and choose the teaching methods that suit them them the best.

Let me now briefly describe the "7 Essential Core Teaching Strategies" that I treated as my "Bible" as I taught all grades from Kindergarten through Grade 6 over the past 33 years.

1. Effective Classroom Management is the #1 key for a successful lesson, day, week, month and year.

There are many facets to ensuring effective classroom management including assertive classroom discipline, classroom behavior management, verbal and non-verbal communication strategies, classroom rules and classroom time management. Learning the details behind these essential classroom management strategies is the first step to success.

2. Learn about your students and know what they like and dislike. Recognize their successes and understand their failures. Create a strong relationship with them and they will with you.

3. Motivate and encourage your students to set some goals for themselves, then help them to reach their goals and move on to a new set of goals.

4. A productive teacher student relationship is so vital to having a successful school year. You must respect, care about and show concern for the development of their students.Teachers that create a positive learning environment and show that they care are most likely to have their students reciprocate and show respect for them and their fellow classmates.

5. Communication with parents is critical. When dealing with parents you must always remember to act very professionally even if you have formed a close bond with a parent. Always be ready to speak and work with parents for the betterment of their child and in some cases this may involve a fair bit of tact when dealing with difficult parents or a difficult situation. You are accountable to the student but parents are also responsible for their child and accountable to you.

6. Be Accountable ... You are responsible to your students (foremost), their parents, your school, and of course, to yourself. This is an on-going process every day, week, and month of the school year. It is imperative that you always keep that in mind.

7. To be truly successful in this great profession, you must have a real passion for it. A passion to have fun with your students, pass on your knowledge to them and watch them grow throughout the year(s).

As you progress and gain experience in our great profession, I know that you will realize that using the teaching strategies that I have briefly described here will make you a better teacher. Incorporate them into your daily routines and both you and your students will greatly benefit.

Best of Luck!
