You can't help but love a cuddly pug. Their cute little wrinkly faces and adorable characters can't be ignored. However, anyone that is contemplating adopting one should make sure that they know about the dire pug health problems that the breed faces.
Many people do not know that while the pug's face is so cute, it is also a problem area. First off, the bulging of a pug's eyes is caused by the face's shape and eye placement. This can cause the eyes to get cut if they rub up against the food bowl or any other object. This should be carefully watched for, however it is not a life threatening issue.
One of the issues that you will find in a Pug is an elongated soft palate that is associated with the shape of the face. In the Pug, this flap of skin at the back of the throat can constrict the airway causing several annoying issues such as funny breathing, coughing and snoring. If any of these problems become to annoying they can be corrected with surgery.
There are however, two Pug health problems that are a lot more serious in nature.
If your dog shows the signs of muscle weakness or has difficulty is simply taking a walk, he/she may show signs of this disease called Pug Dog Encephalitis which affects the brain through inflammation. If your Pug is around the age(s) of 2 or 3 and shows these signs you should take your dog to the Vet as quickly as possible as it is known as a killer among the Pug community
A birth defect of the breed is called Hemi-vertebrae, it causes an imbalance within the dogs spine. Although it may not be preventable, it is detectable! An x-ray will enable you to make the best decision for you and your pet, and help avoid the pain of paralysis caused by the imbalance.
If you're thinking of adopting a Pug you need to keep in mind the Pug health problems they can have. Fortunately the terrible problems only affect a small percentage of Pugs so you don't need to let it overly affect your choice.
