The rise of Free Masonry as a political and cultural force commenced at the end of the 1900's. But what is very curious with regard to this episode in history is that it coincided with an acceleration of the imminent explosion of Egytological studies which gained considerable momentum at that time.
Although the story is clouded by cranks and obsessives, a few details are beyond dispute. Whatever its precise origins, Freemasonry undeniably played an extremely significant role in the eighteenth-century scientific, political, and cultural advances which we now call the Enlightenment.
During this remarkable time in history most major figures in history were either mason or influenced by Freemasonry and all masons were Egyptophiloes. The Masons claimed that they drew their beginnings from Egypt and made these claims by pointing to Egyptian texts and an lineage dating to the Egyptian priesthood.
The masons saw their lodges as Egyptian temples and decorated them with all manner of Egyptian symbols, including the still misunderstood hieroglyphs: hence, among other phenomena, the image of the pyramid and the eye, placed on the reverse of the Great Seal of the United States and dollar bill.
That Masonic Freemasonry flourished under the imperial rule of Napoleon is a matter of conspiratorial theory and record record, but it remains uncertain that he himself was a Mason. Nonetheless, Napoleon was know to use Masonic - Egyptian emblems in his protocols.
On May 19, 1798 the time was ripe for Napoleon to spread the theory of Egyptophila on a massive scale. Napoleon set sail from southern France for Egypt to launch his campaign and thus his invasion of the land of the Pharaoh's. This became one of the most important dates in the history of the Great Pyramid.
