My guide to trustworthy bookmakers

You know, most bookmakers are run by good, honest people. But some of them are not - and it's my job to avoid those bookmakers and keep my website visitors away from them. I won't mention them here, but they are notable in their absence. I do - however- insist on a range of bookies for practical reasons. Here are my recommendations:

1. Paddy Power: The reason I trust Paddy is that so many Irish people trust Paddy Power - and the Irish are renowned for paying for everything in cash. For them to go online, this is a sure sign of trust. You get every market you'll ever need on PP, and pay-out is rapid.

2. Betfair: The Maltese-based bookie has become an internet phenomenon with a host of free bet promotions that have boosted their ranks. It's not so complicated - in effect you become the bookie if you want - you can back or lay on almost any event, and the odds are often better than at a traditional bookie. It's professional, and you are guaranteed technical and gaming support. Your money is 100% safe with Betfair.

3. William Hill: I'm not massively keen on the website as it is quite sparse - a little out of date perhaps - but the racing afficionados flock to William Hill because they have a very solid track record with horse racing from the old days of high street betting. Along with Coral and Ladbrokes, they are the real old-guard of British high-street bookies. They have some quite basic free bet offers for newcomers, but the question is trust - and racing fans have trusted them for years. So do I.

4. Jaxx: I wouldn't usually recommend a bookmaker that does not have a high street presence, but Jaxx is as close to a Web 2.0 bookie site as you will come, and they have some serious backing in Premiership football clubs. If you like your football, Jaxx is second to none - they have markets for almost every league in Europe, right down to the Polish second division.

5. Totesport: I like Totesport very much, despite the fact that you don't have the chance to buy the odds when you place the bet. You get the odds as the event starts (or they are chosen afterwards) which means that sometimes, your winnings are not as high as you would have got with other bookies. But... Totesport is stable - it's reliable - and once more, it's very safe. The website is excellent - the Tote got a re-branding and they are at every racecourse as the bookie you can trust.

So there you go - 5 bookmakers you can try out without risk. I say that you should avoid online bookmakers whose sites look like they were thrown together in ten minutes. Look around and you'll find them. If they don't have a range of markets, it means that they don't have enough people working for them, researching the markets. And that's bad. Stick to the big names and you won't go wrong.
