Standing on the surfboard:

Before you try to stand up on a wave, you should know the process on dry land first.

Find a quite section of beach, and place your board on the sand. Make sure you either remove the fins, or push them into the sand so they cannot break with your weight. Now position yourself on the surfboard as you would be when your paddling for a wave, then grab the rails below your chest, and extend your arms straight. In one single motion pop up, pushing on the board with your hands, and pulling your knees towards your chest. Land on your board, so that you keep your dominant leg towards the tail and the other leg just above center.

Once you get to your feet, keep your center of gravity low and weight centered. It's fine to keep holding the rails of the board for balance, so long as you get onto your feet as fast and smoothly as possible.

Crouch on the board with your knees bent. By keeping your center of gravity low like this, you will be able to stay on your feet for longer.

You can easily forget the process with the rush of the wave, so repeat the process a few times on the beach, to really get the feel for it.

When your on the wave, take enough time to steady yourself. When you feel balanced, quickly pop onto your feet, while leaving your hands on the board.

When you get your balance sorted, you can begin to stand up quicker, and even start to pop up when the board drops down the face of the wave.

Now you've covered the basics, you just have to practice, practice, practice. So best of Luck.
